Regeni case: defendant 007 participated in investigations into Giulio’s death

Legal family: obstructionism and misdirections from Egypt

In the inspection carried out on 10 February 2016 on the site where Giulio Regeni’s body was found by the two investigative teams, one Egyptian and the other Italian, one of the 007 accused in the trial in Rome was also present. This is what emerged from the hearing of the ROS and SCO investigators in the proceedings against four members of National Security. During the hearing before the Court of Assizes of Rome, the photos portraying the officer Uhsam Helm present at the inspection on the road connecting Cairo with Alexandria were shown. According to the witnesses, the accused also participated in almost all the meetings of the investigative teams during the investigation of the case.

Today, from the trial for the murder of Giulio Regeni, not only has “the absolute lack of Egyptian collaboration emerged”, but the “obstructionism and misdirection” carried out by the National Security investigators who formally had to collaborate in the investigations in relation to the murder of young university researcher from Friuli. The defender of the Regeni family, civil party in the trial, the lawyer Alessandra Ballerini, underlined this at the end of the hearing. “The beginning of the reconstruction of these difficult investigations in Cairo, and also the climate of intimidation” to the Ros and Sco detectives present on site. “There was a lot of protest from the Egyptians and a lot of obstructionism.” The criminal lawyer then added: “We understood the informality with which these witnesses heard, so much so that no reports were made. Our factual investigators were prevented from asking direct questions, and even asking the Egyptians to ask questions and if they didn’t consider them relevant or uncomfortable they didn’t ask them to the witnesses.”
