A Brother at the Mill – afternoon dedicated to nature and the Brother at the Mulino Scodellino in Castel Bolognese

Meeting dedicated to nature, coastal habitats, avifauna and in particular the plover, a shorebird increasingly at risk of extinction that lives and nests on the coasts, also present in Emilia-Romagna.

We will talk about it on Sunday 5 May, from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, at the beautiful Scodellino Mill, a fifteenth-century artefact of “industrial archaeology” among the oldest in Italy, splendidly preserved in every detail, recovered and still functioning. The mill is immersed in nature and in the fields of the Roman “castrum” of Castel Bolognese.

The Ravenna naturalist Giorgio Lazzari will talk to us about the Ravenna coasts, their habitats, the flora and fauna which, thanks to the presence of the first mouth of the Po Delta, still persist over the centuries and have few equals in all of Italy. Due to its position, among other things, the Mill represents a connection point between the Vena dei Gessi Park, the Senio valley and the Po Delta Park.

The ornithologist Mattia Bacci, of the Ornithologists Association of Emilia-Romagna (AsOER) will touch more specifically on the theme of the avifauna of our Region, and then tell us about the plover, an often unknown biodiversity treasure of our beaches. The species, in fact, nests on the seashore and in internal lagoons and is taken as a symbol of the coasts where they try to combine tourism with nature protection. The plover is protected by European Directives and is at possible risk of extinction: only thanks to our attention and awareness will we be able to reverse a trend that seems to be evident. The meeting will be led by volunteers from the Network of Associations “Save the plover of the Ravenna and Cervia coast”, who, with the scientific support of AsOER, have been trying to provide information directly on the beaches since 2020, through controls and constant contact with the beach operators and the public bodies directly involved, in order to be able to protect both the species during the very difficult nesting phase and the seaside activities that take place at the same time.

The meeting concludes with a team quiz with awards dedicated to all guests, including the little ones, for whom a small gift will be provided.
