The Hollywood star, three times Oscar winner, will receive recognition during the opening night of the Festival scheduled for May 14th. She will be returning to the Croisette for the first time since 1989, when she triumphed as best actress with A Cry in the Night: «A great honor, winning here is one of the highest achievements in the art of cinema».
Meryl Streep will receive the Palme d’Or for Lifetime Achievement to the Cannes Film Festival. The Hollywood star, already a three-time Oscar winner, will collect the honorary recognition during the opening evening of the 77th edition of the transalpine event, scheduled for May 14th. She will be the second of the year together with George Lucas, who will instead be the protagonist of the last night on Sunday 25th, when all the prizes will also be awarded to the films in competition. The tribute will also mark a highly anticipated return for the diva of world cinema on the Croisette, where she has been missing since 1989. On that occasion she participated with the film A cry in the night by Fred Schepisi, for which she received – as often in her career – the award for best actress. Before her, Marco Bellocchio, Catherine Deneuve, Jane Fonda and Jodie Foster had also received the honorary Palme d’Or, just to name a few.

“I am immensely honored to receive this prestigious award,” she explained Meryl Streep, which will be on the stage of the Grand Théâtre Lumière on May 14th, in a note on the Festival website. «Winning at Cannes, for an artist, has always represented the highest goal in the art of cinema. Standing in the shadow of those who came before me is exciting, I can’t wait to come to France to thank everyone in person.” The Hollywood diva, who boasts an incredible record of 21 award nominations Oscar awards of which three are on the board, she will be honored for her great career in which she was able to play “strong women” and always give “nuances and depth” to her characters. «She uses intuition and hard work to reinvent herself in every appearance» we read on the Cannes Film Festival website and she «has never given up on publicly denouncing the precariousness of women in the film industry».
The president of Cannes was also enthusiastic Iris Knoblach and the general delegate Thierry Frémaux. “We all have something of Meryl Streep inside us,” declared the Festival leaders. «We all remember Sophie’s Choice, Kramer vs. Kramer, The Bridges of Madison County And The devil wears Prada. Because it has spanned 50 years of cinema and embodied countless masterpieces, it is part of the collective imagination and our shared love for cinema.” Among the upcoming projects of the 74-year-old diva there is the fourth season of the series Only Murders in the Buildingwhere she will reprise her character as Loretta Durkin alongside Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin.
