“He kept yelling at me. He attacked me and I defended myself. I don’t even remember where I hit him.” The 45-year-old from Sri Lanka accused of attempted murder was interrogated yesterday morning in prison, in the presence of his lawyer Tommaso Creola.

Last Saturday evening, in fact, the Sri Lankan stabbed a 42-year-old compatriot in a park in Castelnuovo Rangone. Yesterday morning the judge validated the arrest and ordered the suspect to be placed in precautionary custody in prison, deeming the risk of repetition of the crime to exist.

The victim is still hospitalized in Baggiovara, with a reserved prognosis. The only update on his condition is that yesterday afternoon he was moved from intensive care to the general surgery department.

The attack, we remember, took place inside the ‘Holden’ Park in Castelnuovo Rangone a few hours after the crime in via Casette Zanasi.

The Sassuolo carabinieri, who immediately arrived on site, arrested the 45-year-old, who was found to be illegal. He had the knife on him, with a 20 centimeter blade, used to hit the victim.

It was the citizens who raised the alarm, witnessing the scene. However, it seems that the motive is linked to futile reasons: the man, who works in a slaughterhouse, explained that he was the victim’s cohabitant and that three weeks ago, precisely for reasons of cohabitation, they had already come to a ‘clash’.

He now remains in prison. Meanwhile, still on the subject of security, politics is also trying to be more incisive.

Yesterday the mayor of Castelnuovo, Massimo Paradisi, announced via social media: “I have signed a contingent and urgent ordinance which prohibits the consumption of alcohol and spirits in public areas, within parks, green areas, squares, public streets and places assimilated to them from 5 pm until 4 am, the provision is valid until May 15th and extends an existing ordinance relating to the use of glass in some places.

This, together with the extraordinary patrols that are taking place in these hours, is intended to be a first, prompt and extremely decisive response that we want to give to what has happened in recent days”.

The Carabinieri has also announced that it has intensified controls, and that they will continue in the coming days. On the first day of checks, the carabinieri stopped and inspected 14 vehicles and identified 36 people, of which 26 of foreign origins.
