Almost a ton of “counterfeit” olive oil seized by the police: in the van also a block of prints of a well-known oil brand.
A shipment of counterfeit olive oil has been seized by the Carabinieri of Naples: it was in green tin containers, but above all with a block of prints of hundreds of labels of a well-known but falsified brand, not yet applied. Everything leads us to believe that the whole oil was less than extra virgin, and above all that shortly thereafter the labels would have been applied and then resold as if it had been an original product of the brand, with all the risks (and deceptions) for consumers.
He was driving the van stopped by the Naples police this morning a 27 year old woman, originally from Afragola and already known to the police: the cargo has been seized and will now be subjected to chemical analysis. The woman, meanwhile, has been reported: the alleged crime is that of selling non-genuine food substances as genuine, for which she risks imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of up to 1,032 euros. The load was found in the bed of the small van she was driving: a total of almost 900 liters of olive oil, already bottled in green tin containers, but without labels which, presumably, would have been applied shortly thereafter. In fact, in the van there was also a block of prints of a well-known brand of extra virgin olive oil.
A scam, that ofcounterfeit olive oil, well known in Naples (and beyond): it is in fact a liquid that is the result of mixing sunflower seed oil with coloring substances, such as chlorophyll and beta-carotene. The mixture thus obtained is packaged in cans and bottles on which counterfeit labels of well-known brands in the sector are then affixed. Similar cases are well known: the analyzes on the olive oil seized today will clarify whether it is really olive oil that was passed off as extra virgin even though it was not.
