International drug trafficking with the port of Salerno used as a “national hub” for the importation of drugs from South America. The ROS carabinieri carried out an order issued by the investigating judge of the Court of Salerno against 15 people held responsible in various capacities for criminal association aimed at trafficking, including transnational, of cocaine and marijuana, theft, receiving stolen goods and threats, all crimes aggravated by the mafia method. Also involved was Antonio Malafronte, an entrepreneur from Boscoreale who is the co-owner of a company linked to drug trafficking.

As part of the same investigations coordinated by the Salerno DDA, at the end of April 2023 a load of marijuana was intercepted and seized, weighing over a ton in total, also hidden in a container departing from the Canadian port of Montreal and arrived in the port of Salerno through an import-export company in Poggiomarino. The involvement of Antonio Malafronte, co-owner of the company interested in importing the cargo, as well as the Italian-American Michele Annunziata, would have emerged. The latter would have organized the importation of the drugs, financed in part by the Neapolitan Giuseppe Gargiulo, and would therefore have appointed, for financial compensation, Franco Volpe and one of the unavailable subjects for the coordination of the material operations for recovering the narcotic.

The investigation, coordinated by the Salerno DDA and conducted by the Special Operational Group of the Carabinieri, made it possible to shed light on the activity of a criminal association composed mainly of subjects of Campania origin in relationships with members to the ‘ndrangheta gangs of the Alvaro family of Sinopoli.

The central element of the group would be represented by Carmine Ferrara, who would act as an intermediary between foreign drug traffickers and organizations operating on the national territory. During the investigations, the role of the port of Salerno as a national hub for the importation of drugs from South America emerged. The Carabinieri ROS and the Financial Police, which provided the necessary support during the various investigations, with the coordination of this Office, in March 2023 found 220 kg of cocaine hidden in a container coming from Ecuador and embarked on a motor vessel flying the Lebanese flag.

According to the accusatory hypothesis, shared by the investigating judge, the operations would have been coordinated by Franco Volpe and Cataldo Esposito, together with accomplices who are currently untraceable, and would have seen the interest of the Calabrian Alvaro family. In particular, part of the narcotic would have been destined to the Calabrians Nicola and Francesco Alvaro, financiers of the importation and buyers of cocaine, represented in the Salerno area, for the intermediation operations with Carmine Ferrara and his collaborator Salvatore Rocco, by the Calabrian Fortunato Marafioti and by Neapolitan Errico D’Ambrosio, the latter having the role of delegate of the Alvaro family and the Neapolitan co-financiers.
