“Let’s build together a Europe of peace, work and social justice”, is the motto for the event in Piazza Maggiore on May 1st, launched by CGIL, CISL and UIL.

“There will be no bloodshed between us”, Enrico Bassani, CISL secretary of the Bologna metropolitan area, opens with this line, the story of the Workers’ Day, this year dedicated to the drama of Suviana, where the three unions united are ready to form part civil if the conditions exist to do so.

“We remember the dead and fight for the living”, speaks Michele Bulgarelli, general secretary of CGIL Bologna, underlining that deaths in a ‘context of interference’, where multiple companies and multiple contracts coexist, are in third place among the causes of death on the I work in Bologna, from 2014 to today. For Marcello Borghetti, general secretary of Uil Emilia-Romagna, “we must act against this production system which compresses costs on work and safety”. Borghetti then defines Suviana as “a massacre that cannot be justified by fatality”. An event that closes a ten-day bridge dedicated to democracy, which began on 21 April with the anniversary of the liberation of Bologna, until 25 April and the day dedicated to safety at work on 28 April.

Wednesday will be kicked off in the square by greetings from the mayor Matteo Lepore and the archbishop of Bologna Matteo Maria Zuppi. From 9.45 the three local secretaries of CGIL, CISL and UIL, Bulgarelli, Bassani and Borghetti, will speak, and Carlo Soricelli’s work, ‘The wall of white butterflies’, over three meters long, which collects 300 photos, will also be displayed. workers killed at work.

Federica Megalizzi, vice-president of the foundation dedicated to her brother Antonio, the journalist who disappeared during the attack in Strasbourg in 2018, will also speak on stage. Finally, the three unions did not like the new European stability pact. “A step backwards compared to the hope of post-Covid development,” says Bassani. Bulgarelli echoes him: “Europe has not spent 1 minute for peace in Palestine and on wages”. Therefore, “we need a Europe with more quality”, concludes Borghetti.

From 4pm to midnight there will be a concert in Piazza Maggiore. “A varied and dynamic line up”, says Arci Bologna who is entrusted with the artistic direction of the event. Among the most anticipated names this year: Erlend Øye & La Comitiva, Giovanni Truppi + band and Sibode Dj and the Bolognese Rumba de Bodas. Representing hip-pop, however, there will be the young Ele A, the veteran Egreen and the underground collective Triflow. Not just music.

Cinema Modernissimo, together with Cgil Bologna, also celebrates May 1st with 4 films: ‘Modern Times’ by Charlie Chaplin (11 am); ‘Oliver Twist’ by Roman Polanski (4pm); ‘Sorry We Missed You’ by Ken Loach (6.30pm); ‘Full Monty’ by Peter Cattaneo (8.30pm).
