THE PLOT
In 2013 (it seemed far away then) America is a wasteland (so reduced by a nuclear war). The survivors have barricaded themselves in forts to be able to defend themselves from the gangs of marauders who infest the town. But one day a vagabond who claims to be a Western Union postman puts himself at the head of the revolt. America will be America again.
WHY SEE IT
Because Costner creates a science fiction western where the return to civilization proceeds with conviction and boldness as in Costner’s rides through California. To rise again, America must return to its origins, is the message of the film. Of course, in his joyful patriotism Kevin occasionally borders on the ridiculous (“I believe in the United States of America” he shouts as he fights hand-to-hand with the villain of the situation).
