TRENT. The pathological anatomy operational unit of the Santa Chiara hospital in Trento is the provincial reference center for diagnostic feedback on victims of sudden infant death syndrome and of unexpected death of the fetus.

This was established – according to a note – by the Provincial Council, on the recommendation of the councilor for health and social policies, Mario Tonina, who identified the requirements set by the Ministry of Health in the centre. Sudden infant death syndrome (Sids), also known as cot death, consists of the sudden death of a child aged between one month and one year. In order to improve knowledge of these forms of sudden death and prevent their onset, a law, 31/2006, was adopted which provides that infants within one year of life and fetuses after the 25th week of gestation, who died without apparent cause, are subjected to diagnostic tests to be carried out in authorized centres.

Since March 2012, it had been identified as a reference for Trentino “Lino Rossi” research center of the University of Milan and a draft agreement had been approved with the Santi Paolo e Carlo territorial socio-health company of Milan to bring the provincial health services company of Trento to progressive autonomy. With the new resolution, the provincial reference center will be the Santa Chiara hospital.
