Here, the challenge for Italy is to get out of gas, useless nuclear power

(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 29 – “The real challenge for the decabonisation of the Italian electricity sector is to plan the exit from gas – 45% in 2023 -, which is possible, safe and economical, through the combination of renewables, batteries and electricity networks, without the need to resort to nuclear power.

Precisely for this reason we expect that the G7 will also adopt new objectives for batteries and electricity networks, recognizing their strategic and necessary role for the transition of the electricity system, in parallel with the development of renewables”.

Luca Bergamaschi, director and co-founder of the Italian climate think tank Ecco, claims this in a statement, commenting on the announcement by the British Minister for Renewables and Nuclear, Andrew Bowie, on the decision of the G7 countries to abandon coal for production electric by 2035.

“For the first time, advanced economies have set a common objective for the exit from coal in the electricity sector – explains Bergamaschi -, with important repercussions for Asian economies, in particular Japan, but also for China and India. Italy already has a target of 2025 for the peninsula and 2028 for Sardinia. Given the marginal weight – 5% in 2023 – of coal in the Italian electricity mix, the real G7 reference objective for our country is the achievement of an electricity system. decarbonized by 2035”.
