Italy is preparing for the arrival of sand from the desert: what impact on the climate and daily life

A vast one cloud load of dust coming directly from heart of the Sahara desert will invest much of Italy in the next few days, then going to interact with an intense thunderstorm disturbance. This means that it will be better to postpone car washing programmes, especially in areas where rainfall is expected, as the risk areas are larger than expected.

The atmospheric configuration predicted for Tuesday 30 April will see the formation of a deep cyclone over the Mediterranean Sea, which will favor the attraction of warm currents from the southern quadrants directly from the Sahara desert. This atmospheric mechanism will bring large quantities of suspended desert dust, which will concentrate at the highest altitudes of the atmosphere and, after a long journey, will also reach our country.

According to the Skiron maps of the University of Athensthe key days will be Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 1st May: the arrival of a disturbance will favor the settling of the dust present in the atmosphere in many of our regions on the ground, especially due to the intense rainfall. The most affected regions from this phenomenon will be those of North and those on the Tyrrhenian side, where the heaviest rainfall is expected.

Not only will we have to keep ourselves company with yellowish or reddish skies, especially during sunset or when the sunlight interacts with the suspended dust, making the atmosphere particularly suggestive.

This unusual weather event requires attention and caution from citizens, especially those suffering from respiratory problems. It is advisable to stay indoors during the most intense phases of the phenomenon and take protective measures, such as the use of masks, if necessary.

In conclusion, the sand from the desert that is heading towards Italy represents an extraordinary meteorological phenomenon, which reminds us how important it is to understand and respect the complexity of our climate.
