A notable increase in cocoa and coffee prices is occurring on international markets, leading to concerns about possible price increases for Italian consumers. According to the latest Codacons studythese increases could soon be reflected in the prices of the products we find in supermarkets.

In January, the price of cocoa stood at around $4,250 per ton; at the end of April, this figure jumped to $10,800 per ton, marking an increase of 154%. THECoffee shows similar trends: Robusta rose from $2,800 to $4,250 per ton, an increase of 51.8%, while Arabica rose 18%, from 190 to 224 cents per pound.

Average coffee prices in Italy:

These increases directly affect consumer products in Italy, such as chocolate, pods, capsules and moka coffee, which together generate an annual turnover of over 10.2 billion euros. In particular, the chocolate market is worth around 2 billion euros, while that of espresso coffee at the bar amounts to around 7 billion euros. The impact of these increases has already been felt in retail prices, with significant increases compared to last year. If prices continue to rise, a further average increase of 5% is expected, costing Italian consumers around 510 million euros more for coffee and chocolate alone.
