Investigations are underway by the firefighters and the police into the fire that heavily damaged the walkway in via Messina Marine. It seems that the flames started from piles of waste and enveloped the wooden structure. It seems that a cylinder also exploded.

The Romagnolo walkway built in 2003 by the Province of Palermo, costing 2.5 million euros, has been abandoned for years and is a refuge for the homeless. Yesterday the fire was put out only late at night. The wooden structure had also been seized and exhibits had been presented to the prosecutor’s office several times. In recent years it has burned down several times.

The Romagnolo pier is on fire

The structure has been abandoned for years, awaiting a redevelopment project. The Romagnolo pier was set on fire several times. The last vandalism episode dates back to the end of the summer of 2021. On 28 September of that year, in fact, unknown persons set the flames a few minutes after the conclusion of a civic assembly which had taken place on site regarding the relaunch of the pier Romagnolo.

“The Municipality must intervene”

Fact on which the councilor of the II District Giovanni Colletti asks for an urgent commitment from the Municipal Administration. “The Municipality must take charge of this site as soon as possible to decide what to do with it. If it must be torn down, let it be torn down. Otherwise, the Municipality will take responsibility for cleaning and fencing the site in a concrete manner. We can’t sleep on this anymore. This case must be resolved definitively.”

“Once again we are witnessing ignoble gestures – adds the president Joseph Federico -. People without dignity who continually have no qualms about carrying out these criminal acts. Now we need to intervene immediately, enabling the concessionaire to be able to recover what remains of this artefact.”

Homeless people lived in the facility

The fences surrounding the pier have been torn down several times over the years. The house, unusable from a structural point of view, has become a shelter for some homeless people who live in the area. Fortunately, at the time of the fire, the “street friends” were not present on the scene. Alerted by the residents, firefighters arrived in the area of Via Messina Marine and took steps to put out the flames.
