Summer fires, ban from the desert region: risks for Cilento and Vallo di Diano

With the imminent arrival of the summer season, the territory of the province of Salerno and the entire Campania is preparing to face not only a wave of tourists looking for relaxation and natural beauty, but also an increasingly present and constant threat: the forest fires.

The tender announced by the Campania Region for the assignment of the forest firefighting service with helicopters has been declared deserted. No company responded to the appeal, thus currently leaving an essential service uncovered for the prevention and extinguishing of fires that threaten the area.

The situation had already been brought to the attention of the regional offices last December, when the service was due to expire. However, despite the procedure initiated by the special Major Works office for the award of the contract, no offer was submitted by the deadline of 14 April.

With a budget of 6.2 million euros, the tender provided for the rental of eight helicopters for the reconnaissance, prevention and active suppression of forest fires for the years 2024 and 2025. Despite the financial coverage guaranteed by the resources of the Por Fesr 2021 /2027 for over 8 million euros, no company has expressed interest in taking on this important task.

Faced with this emergency, the regional offices of Palazzo Santa Lucia are now called upon to find alternative solutions in a short time to guarantee the safety of the territory during the summer.
