AgenPress – If Israel invades Rafah in the southern Strip, President Joe Biden may consider restricting the sale of some weapons to the Jewish state. Journalist Thomas Friedman claimed this in an article in the New York Times (NYT), citing some US sources according to which the Biden administration believes that the announced ground operation in Rafah could also jeopardize an agreement with Hamas for the release of the hostages.

Not only that, the invasion of Rafah – according to the same sources – would put at risk the initiatives that the US intends to promote in the region. In essence, “the formation of an Arab peacekeeping force that could replace the Israeli army in Gaza, a diplomatic security agreement between Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United States and the Palestinians and, finally, the union of moderate Arab states and allies Europeans in a coalition against Iran’s missile threats to Israel.” All related initiatives – underlined Friedman – linked to the fact that Israel leaves the Strip and reaches a ceasefire.
