The match opens with prolonged possession by Cremonese, with Pickel receiving on the right and going for a cross, finding Joronen’s catch. On the turnaround in front Saro is good at anticipating Gytkjaer coming out, ready to head a free kick. In the 11th minute Castagnetti stops Busio on the restart and receives the first yellow card of the match. In the 16th minute Gytkjaer controls a long ball from Pohjanpalo and challenges Lochoshvili, who is decisive in blocking the Dane’s way. In the 20th minute Candela made a messy intervention against Pickel, with the match director drawing the yellow card against the winger. The game breaks the deadlock in the 24th minute: Vazquez opens on the right for Collocolo and the latter changes play towards Pickel, who does well to reward the insertion of the Argentinian with a header who beats Joronen with a left-footed volley from inside the area. In the 32nd minute Saro is decisive on a close-range attempt by Busio, but the game is stopped for offside. In the 36th minute Vazquez took the initiative from the edge of the area, beat two opponents and shot, but failed to find the target. A minute later, Vazquez received a yellow card for having committed a foul on his own attacking midfield. The Grigiorossi continue to attack and return to shooting with Collocolo, whose right-footed shot from the edge goes over the crossbar. The first half ends with Cremonese in the lead, at the end of the minute of injury time granted by the referee.
The restart started with a change for the home team: Ellertsson was replaced by Bjarkason. The hosts equalized in the 48th minute with Gytkjaer, who served deep from Pohjanpalo to beat Saro on the way out. In the 57th minute Pickel was booked for incorrect behaviour. Three minutes later an opportunity for Venezia, with Pohjanpalo running centrally and finding a great response from Saro coming out with a cross. Coda responds in the 62nd minute with a right-footed shot inside the area deflected for a corner by Svoboda, then Collocolo comes close to scoring with a sudden right-footed shot to the far post. In the 71st minute Saro is once again decisive on Bjarkason, who goes right-footed from close range but finds the left foot of the grey-red goalkeeper. Vanoli changes again by inserting Sverko and Pierini in place of Altare and Candela, while in Cremonese Tsadjout takes over Coda. In the 76th minute Venezia’s second goal: Bjarkason beats Saro in the penalty area and puts the ball in the net. In the 80th minute a whirlwind of changes: Buonaiuto, Falletti and Quagliata replace Vazquez, Sernicola and Pickel. In Venezia Lella takes Gytkjaer’s place, then in the 87th minute Jajalo replaces Busio. Castagnetti shoots from distance without success, then in the 90th minute Ciofani takes Zanimacchia’s place while the referee announces 5 minutes of injury time. At 90+3′ double opportunity for Ciofani in the penalty area, with Joronen decisive in both cases. Despite the final assault, the Grigiorossi emerged defeated from Penzo.
