PIEVE TORINA Twenty-four long years of silence. Of darkness that erases the light, of days that become nights. Of nightmares that turn into hopes. Giuseppe Pazzelli and Giuliana Turchetti have never stopped believing in a miracle, with the certainty that life must be safeguarded. Always. Their son Andrea spent exactly half of his life in a vegetative state. And his heart stopped beating last Thursday, on Liberation Day, at the age of 48.

History

He remained motionless on a bed after being involved in a dramatic car accident. It was June 25, 2000. After an afternoon spent in the company of some friends, Andrea decided to go and eat a pizza in Serravalle with the same group with which he had already spent a few carefree hours. He got into the car of a peer but, shortly afterwards, a very violent collision devastated his life. Andrea ended up in hospital. His condition immediately appeared very serious. For twenty days he fought between life and death in an intensive care bed. The same doctors who treated him, day after day, began to feel defeated. Then, suddenly, he opened his eyes. He thought it was a miracle. He began to hope. But the doctors, in the absence of a real improvement in the clinical picture, decided to disconnect the machines. Andrea didn’t answer the calls, he didn’t react. His gaze always continued to stare at the ceiling. A look dramatically lost in space. His eyes met those of mother Giuliana and father Giuseppe only when they approached Andrea to caress him and shower him with kisses. For 24 years, since that damned accident, it has been like this every day. The parents continued to take care of Andrea with sacrifice and immense love. In their home in Pieve Torina they set up a special room to take care of him. Assistance that has never been lacking, not even during the very difficult post-earthquake period. They did everything they could to try to make his ordeal less hard if possible. And solidarity initiatives in favor of the family had also been organized in Pieve Torina. «From the human side, sometimes I think that death is the best response to this life that is not life – mother Giuliana repeated -, because Andrea no longer has anything alive even if the doctors say that this is not the case. But then I think that maybe one day he knows. Physically he is fine, but it is in his head that, suddenly, darkness has fallen.” And that hoped-for miracle never happened. Andrea died in Camerino hospital, where he had been admitted on Sunday following his worsening condition.

The affection

«In all these years, father Giuseppe and mother Giuliana Turchetti have been a constant and precious presence in the daily life of their only child, making their family an example of strength and dignity, of generosity and of true and unconditional love. Andrea remains in the hearts of those who loved him – says Donatella Pazzelli, president of the Corsa alla Spada e Palio association and relative of the 48-year-old -. The Pazzelli family thanks the medical and paramedical staff of the Camerino hospital, the operators of Santo Stefano and Adi who took care of Andrea and all those who were close to them until the last moment of their dear son’s life.” The funeral was celebrated in the church of Muccia and many inhabitants of Pieve Torina participated in the religious rite.
