A great gesture that was not at all obvious allowed us to saving seven lives, including that of a little girl. The multi-organ harvest was successful thanks to the will of the family of Francesco Carusoa 22-year-old from Letojanni (Messina) who died after a head-on collision on State Road 114 in Taormina last April 20th. The extraordinary commissioner of the Messina ASP made the moving announcement Giuseppe Cucci: «The death of Francesco Caruso has affected the whole community, but the noble gesture of the family who donated the organs and the competence of the doctors of San Vincenzo in Taormina will make 7 people live».

The team was coordinated by Giuseppe Bova who performed the operation. «After the death was confirmed – continues Cuccì – the complex machine for organ removal operations (heart, liver, kidneys and corneas) was set in motion which made it possible to save the lives of people, including a little girl in Turin and other patients at Ismett and at Civico in Palermo.”
Organ donation is a practice of fundamental importance, continues Cuccì, «for ensure the survival of many individuals, who often find themselves in a situation of extreme urgency and depend on the generosity of those who have decided to donate their organs. Thanks to the explant and the subsequent donation, it is possible to save human lives, giving a second chance to those who otherwise would have had no hope of recovery. It is important to raise awareness among the population about the importance of donation, because every day in Italy and around the world many people die waiting for a transplant. Donating your organs – he concludes – means donating life and giving concrete hope to those who fight against serious and often incurable diseases”.
The accident
Francesco was going to work that day, but his life fell apart on state road 114. Lo fatal collision occurred against a motorcycle driven by a 39-year-old of Santa Teresa di Riva. After the accident he was immediately taken to the “San Vincenzo” hospital in Taormina. His life was barely hanging on for just over a day, hospitalized in the intensive care unit.
The clinical picture with which the boy presented himself at the hospital required a miracle, which however did not happen. Francesco died the next day. Hence the decision of parents Enrico and Sabrina who agreed to organ donation. A gesture of enormous generosity which therefore allowed seven lives to be saved in the space of 6 days.
