But what censorship? Today all the newspapers continue to talk about Anthony Darken uppresumed martyr, the man “with the target on him” who even lets himself be interviewed by newspapers around the world, supported by Maurizio Molinari. Yes, censorship. But which? At the moment, Rai has not yet made public the internal investigation requested by the CEO Roberto Sergio, but we can show you exclusively some internal documents that seem to categorically deny the chant repeated for days by the Scurati boys. And reiterated again yesterday in an unbearable avalanche of militant April 25th rhetoric.
The exclusive documents
Let’s start with the cards. What we publish are the documents of the production plan of the program conducted by Serena Bortone, What will be…, complete with an internal email exchange on the press releases of the broadcast on Saturday 20 April. From the correspondence it emerges that Rai production certainly foresaw the presence of Scurati on air, so much so that in an email dated 19 April, signed by the structure manager Ilaria Meccarelli, the lineup is made official with the presence of the writer. The press release also starts from the same address, with Scurati always present, note that it receives the green light from the deputy director of Insights, Giovanni Alibrandi. Not only. On April 19th at 10.35am Rai had also taken care of purchasing return train tickets (first class, obviously) and a night at the River Chateau hotel in Rome. Reservations canceled once Serena Bortone’s tweet explodes all over the media.
Common sense question: what reason would there be to “censor” Scurati and then include him in the lineup, send the press release to all the newspapers and also purchase tickets and hotels for a total expense of 400 euros? Nobody. And in fact the tale of the bad regime that tries to silence the writer doesn’t hold up.
The minute-by-minute reconstruction
Quick step back in time. Morning of April 20: Serena Bortone, after spending the evening on the phone and sending emails, publishes a post to report having discovered “by pure chance” that “Scurati’s contract had been cancelled”. Annoyed at not having been able to “obtain plausible explanations”, the former head of the press office for her PD primaries throws her into a fuss. And he succeeds. In a short time Boldrini, Usigrai, PD singer and company are scandalized by the “censorship of the intellectual”.
Rai strictly denies this. Paul Corsini, director of the Insight, invites us not to confuse “editorial aspects” with economic ones. And this is where the versions do not match. According to journalistic reconstructions, the agency that takes care of the writer’s image would have asked 1800 euros for the short monologue on April 25th. According to some, the Contracts Office and Scurati would have closed the agreement 1500 euros. A cost that is too high for the editorial management, or another Rai office, which imposes the stop.
The issue of the contract gets stuck when the drafting of What will be does he receive the text of the monologue and forward it to the Insights Department? Hard to say. Certainly though State TV does not “censor” Scurati at all, given that it doesn’t prevent him from appearing on air to read his anti-Meloni monologue: he only asks to do so free of charge and in exchange for “advertising” for the TV series based on the author’s novels soon to be broadcast on Sky. A Pproposal that the Rai leaders consider accepted after having received “confirmation” of the lineup from the editorial staff of the program in which Scurati.
The confirmation of this thesis lies precisely in the email sent by Meccarelli to Alibrandi, in which Scurati is present with the wording “TG”, i.e. free of charge; email to which the deputy director gives his consent. In fact, Corsini himself reiterates that – apart from mere bureaucratic issues – “the possibility of going on broadcast has never been questioned”.
The reconstruction, however, is contested by fans of Darken up. Republicfor example, in recent days he published an internal note to Rai which communicated that the author’s participation would be “cancelled for editorial reasons”. This is a phrase that he shouted at the censors. Small problem, actually two. First, as he writes the newspaperthe wording referred to the no to payment of the service by “the editorial direction, which in internal jargon is summarized in the words ‘editorial reasons’”. Second: the internal note (4.54 pm) is prior to the email from the editorial team of “What will be” with the press release (5.41 pm) and the one with the summary of the guests (5.42 pm) in which there is Scurati’s confirmation “free of charge”. At 7.09pm the press release was also forwarded to journalists.
But what censorship
Everything seems to be going smoothly, until Bortone’s tweet the next morning. Those who support the thesis of “political censorship” say that Scurati would not have confirmed his presence for free and that the email with the lineup was sent “to keep the negotiation open”. Be that as it may, when on the morning of April 20th Scurati refuses not to be paid for his anti-government outbursts, the situation explodes.
One thing is certain, however. By “censorship” we mean the action by the public authority to prevent the publication of some writing. Definition that does not match Scurati’s case: net of bureaucratic mess on the contractIn fact, the new martyr of the left could easily have supported his theses on live TV in front of viewers. It would have been enough for him to accept – perhaps reluctantly – participation for free, while enjoying free trains and hotels.
Last note. From the last document we show you, it clearly emerges that the cancellation of the reservations (1.04 pm on April 20th) followed Bortone’s tweet (early morning on April 20th). How strange is this censorship that works to buy tickets and book hotels for a writer they would like to silence.
