«The death of Francesco Caruso, aged only 22, which occurred after a head-on collision on State Road 114, in Taormina, affected the entire community but the noble gesture of the family, who donated the organs, and the competence of the doctors of “San Vincenzo” hospital in Taormina will allow seven people to live». The extraordinary commissioner of the ASP of Messina Giuseppe Cuccì gave the news, joining in the family’s grief and congratulating the team, coordinated by the prof. Giuseppe Bova, who performed the operation, after the medical commission confirmed the irreversibility of brain functions.

«After the death was confirmed – continues Dr. Cuccì – the complex machine for organ removal operations (heart, liver, kidneys and corneas) was set in motion which made it possible to save the lives of people, including a little girl in Turin and other patients at Ismett and at the Civic Center of Palermo. Organ donation is of fundamental importance to guarantee the survival of many individuals, who often find themselves in an extremely urgent situation and depend on the generosity of those who have decided to donate their organs. Thanks to the explant and the subsequent donation it is possible to save human lives, giving a second chance to those who otherwise would have had no hope of recovery. It is important to raise awareness among the population about the importance of donation because every day in Italy and around the world many people die waiting for a transplant. Donating your organs means donating life and giving concrete hope to those who fight against serious and often incurable diseases.”
