Eboli, yesterday the funeral of Francesco Pio

The funeral of little Francesco Pio D’Amaro was held yesterday, the thirteen-month-old child who died on Monday in Eboli after being attacked by two pit bull dogs while he was in his uncle’s arms.

The funeral ceremony, celebrated in the church of San Giuseppe and Fortunato in Borgo Aversana, was heartbreaking. The small white coffin was carried by the child’s relatives for their final farewell. Many people were present: in addition to the family members, many citizens of Eboli and Battipaglia also wanted to pay homage to the coffin.

In the evening, a torchlight procession was also held in Campolongo to remember the child, who died at the age of just thirteen months. In the meantime, investigations into the matter continue and new scenarios are opening up. It seems, in fact, but the investigators express the utmost confidentiality about this, that the attack occurred at 8 in the morning, but emergency services were notified only after thirty minutes, which would have made even the quickest intervention in vain. In any case, it took the rescue team just under twelve minutes to arrive on site.

The owners of the dogs, Gaia Sabato and Fabio Fiorillo, the child’s uncles who were at the scene of the tragedy, Simone and Giuseppe Santoro, and the mother Paola Ferrentino are registered in the register of suspects, accused of complicity in manslaughter for failure to look after the animals. Mayor Mario Conte was also present and proclaimed city mourning and also decided to pay for the funeral and burial, which took place in the morning at the Brignano cemetery in Salerno. The sad story has put the spotlight on two critical issues: one which closely concerns the city of Eburina and the other which takes on a national character.

In fact, there are those who are calling for greater controls on the coast road as well as a crackdown to combat the degradation that exists in those areas. Another aspect that is being debated are the regulations that regulate the detention of certain dogs, considered dangerous. The molossians who attacked and killed the child should be detained following very specific rules. An open debate that is certainly destined to continue.
