He was passionate about the mountains and the sports that can be practiced at high altitude. Matteo Fornaciari, the young 26-year-old from Assago – a town on the outskirts of Milan – who was swept away and killed by an avalanche on the afternoon of Thursday 25 April, did not make it. The first to find him was his brother, as reported by Corriere della Sera. La tradia at 3400 meters above sea level. The avalanche broke off just below the Cevedale crest, mountain between Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige, in Valfurva, in Valtellina, on the border with the Province of Bolzano.

The fact

Matteo was with his brother and nine other friends, all of whom remained unharmed and transported to the valley. The company had reached the summit of Cevedale and then split up. Then it happened. Rescue services were called shortly before 3pm and the mountain rescue operators of the financial police, the national alpine and speleological rescue corps of the Valfurva station, the VII Valtellina and Valchiavenna delegation intervened on site. Two air ambulances were also dispatched from Caiolo and Bolzano. When the rescuers arrived at the scene of the tragedy, there was nothing left to do.

Who was

A student at the Polytechnic University of Milan, Matteo was an athletic and adventurous boy. The images on his Instagram profile show him in a kayak, ski mountaineering or on snow trips. The body was transferred to Sondalo hospital, awaiting tests ordered by the Prosecutor’s Office.
