The Class – Entre les murs, based on the novel of the same name by François Bégaudeau, is a semi-autobiographical story of his experience as a teacher in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. Bégaudeau also starred in the film, which struck a chord with the Cannes jury and thus became the first French film to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes since 1987. The film also earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
The career of Laurent Cantet
After studying at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques in Paris and working in television, Laurent Cantet made his first feature film, Human resources, in 1999. He later took a management internship while starting to work in his father’s factory. The film was voted best feature film at that year’s César Awards. Cantet’s next film, Time Out (2001), expanded his interest in working life, telling the story of a man who hid the fact that he had been fired from his family.
