Perego: “Men and women free themselves day by day, there are no liberators who free us forever”

“Today we celebrate the memory of Liberation of our city and our country from a fascist dictatorshipsuffered in two phases before ’43 and from ’43 to ’45, hidden behind the false face of the Republic of Salò, which generated humiliation, but also liberation from a war that cost deaths, suffering and destruction“. With these words the bishop Gian Carlo Perego opens the homily delivered before the authorities during the celebrations for April 25th.

The bishop speaks of the peace achieved then, a peace that “today seems to be put at risk on the border of Europewhich in the meantime has become our ‘common home’, which we are called responsibly to renew with our vote in the coming weeks. The freedom won at great cost was transformed into a democratic Republic, which put an end to harassment and deaths, the result of ideology and irrationality, and generated the path of a country until today. A path that has also had tragic moments, economic crises, the end of ideologies, but has never lost the ability to reaffirm the value of freedom“.

Faith and reason – adds the bishop – they walk together through historyAlways, and there is no dictatorshipideology that could weaken this union which helps the Church and Christians to spread the Gospel in every situation and maintain one’s freedom and critical sense, even at the cost of giving one’s life“.

“The resistance to the dictatorships of yesterday and today by Christians has always been done in the name of peace”. And this is why, says Perego, “we continue, as in 1948 as citizens and Christians, to repeat the words of the Constitution that ‘Italy repudiates war'”.

Today Christians are called to “be artisans of peace, men and women who know that freedom is always at risk where there is conflict and violence. There are no liberators who free us once and for all, once and for all: there are men and women who free themselves day by day from the tangle of interests, from external conditioning, from compromises, from paralyzing laziness, from the temptation of indifference and civil and moral disengagement”.
