Robbery in broad daylight in a tobacco shop in Melito, cigarettes and money taken away

Melito tobacconist theft

They acted undisturbed in broad daylight in the most central area of Melito and took away cigarettes and money from the cash register of the oldest tobacco shop in the city.

The thieves presumably went into action between 1pm and 2pm, taking advantage of the short closing time of the business near Piazza Santo Stefano. When the owner returned to reopen, the door showed no sign of being broken into, yet dozens of cartons of cigarettes and part of the proceeds had been taken from the tobacconist’s shop.

Theft in a tobacco shop with the streets of Melito full and at rush hour

The thieves probably used so-called Bulgarian keys to open the door, without needing to force the lock. Despite this, it seems truly absurd that thugs could act in broad daylight, in broad daylight with cars flooding the area given the coincidence with work break and school release times.

It remains to be seen whether the images from the nearby surveillance cameras managed to record the thieves’ escape or at least recorded suspicious movements. The fact is that what happened is more singular and worrying than ever.
