According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the number of units of the Apple Vision Pro that the company plans to ship in 2024 has been reducedgoing from an initial forecast of 700-800,000 units to just 400-450,000 units.
Orders were scaled back even before the Vision Pro launched in markets outside the US, which Kuo says is a sign that demand in the US has “slumped sharply below expectations”. As a result, Apple is expected to take a “conservative view” on headphone demand when the Vision Pro launches in other countries.
Kuo previously said that Apple would introduce the Vision Pro in new markets ahead of June’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which suggests we could see it available in additional regions in the next month or so.
Apple expects shipments of the Vision Pro to decline year-over-year in 2025 compared to 2024, and the company is said to be “reviewing and adjusting” its roadmap for the same product category. Kuo doesn’t believe there will be a new Vision Pro model in 2025, an adjustment from a previous report that suggested a modified version of the headset would enter mass production late next year.
In a February report, Kuo said Apple was working to improve manufacturing efficiency and supply chain management, with few changes to product specifications and user experience. At that time, the analyst estimated that we wouldn’t see a Vision Pro with significant updates until 2027.
Kuo believes Apple needs to work to address the lack of key applications, price and comfort without impacting the user experience. Poor sales of the Vision Pro are expected to impact the growth of pancake lenses and the adoption of microOLED display technology in small consumer electronics.
