25 April, Toti: «Political forces and cultures recognize that Liberation Day is everyone’s celebration»

The President of the Region: «It would be time to tone down the controversies, to avoid any kind of distinction and end the era in which someone considers this celebration more theirs than others, getting to celebrate a founding element of our country all together»

“April 25th has always brought with it controversies: when these controversies end, perhaps Italy will be truly mature, making this anniversary a celebration for everyone. It must be reiterated very clearly that ours is a Republic founded on anti-fascism, which was born from the ashes of a tragic war that devastated Europe and in which the partisan resistance played its part and, above all, redeemed a country, making him sit among the democracies that won this war.” Thus the president of the Liguria Region on the sidelines of the solemn session of the Regional Council for Liberation Day.

“On the other hand – he adds – it would be necessary for all the cultures of our country, not just the political forces, to recognize that Liberation is a celebration for everyone: it is the celebration of the great democracies, starting from the United States of America and the Great Britain, who defended the flag of freedom even in the darkest times after the start of the war, from the partisan forces which are represented by the Badogliani and monarchist soldiers, up to the Garibaldi brigades of the Communist Party. All this is in our constitutional charter, it doesn’t seem so difficult to remember it, it doesn’t seem so complex to make it a common heritage. On the other hand, we all respond, especially those who hold an elective office, to that same Constitution.”

“I therefore believe – he concludes – that it is time to tone down the controversies, to avoid any kind of distinction and end the era in which some consider this celebration more theirs than others, getting to celebrate all together a founding element of our country , as France does for the storming of the Bastille and the United States does every Fourth of July.”
