«At an audition they asked me to kiss 10 boys in one day. I didn’t mean to be difficult, but it was disgusting.”

She dazzled the theaters with her beauty and skill, playing the most disparate roles and confirming her chameleon-like ability which earned her an Oscar (as well as Golden Globes, Baftas and more) for her role in “Les Misérables” . Anne Hathaway began her climb to success at a very young age, playing characters even in low-budget films. It was precisely in that period that she was the protagonist, like many others, of unpleasant castings.

In an interview with V Magazine Hathaway revealed that during some of the auditions for romantic comedies of the 2000s, participants were asked to perform “chemistry test” with a series of actors, to evaluate how much understanding there was between them. A modus operandi considered normal at the time, which aroused mixed feelings in the actress: «In the 2000s – she said – and this happened to me too , it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test their chemistry. Which is actually the worst way to do it.”

During one audition, Hathaway recalled, “I was told, ‘Ten guys are coming today and you get to choose. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?“” At that point, she said, “I thought there was something wrong with me because I wasn’t at all excited about doing it. It was disgusting to me.” And she continued: “I was so young and terribly aware of how easy it was to lose everything, being labeled as “the difficult one”. So I just pretended to be excited and moved on.”

«No one was trying to hurt me – he concluded -. It was just a very different time and nowadays we would know better how to handle it.”
