The community of Montagna in Valtellina is in shock following the sudden death of Carlo Lenatti, a 38-year-old resident of Piano, who lost his life in a tragic accident at work which occurred this morning in the province of Como, in the Torriggia Alta hamlet in the municipal area of Laglio .

Lenatti, owner of a small sole proprietorship, was driving a rented small excavator in reverse to carry out excavation work for a pavement that needed to be carried out. For reasons that will now be up to the investigation to establish, on a downhill road and in a very narrow point, the excavator overturned on itself, trapping the worker who was driving it. The fatal workplace accident occurred a few minutes before 10 am in via Santa Laura, inside a private construction site in the Torriggia Alta district.

The individual company of the 38-year-old from Valtellina had been commissioned to carry out the excavation of the pavement in that steep and narrow street. The accident, from what has been possible to reconstruct, occurred in front of a witness who immediately alerted the emergency services after hearing the screams for help. The 118 men arrived in Via Santa Laura and sent both a medical car and an ambulance from the Cernobbio Red Cross. The desperate operations to try to save the victim continued for several minutes but at 10.40 the doctors could do nothing but confirm his death. The injuries sustained in the crushing were too serious.

The firefighters also came to the rescue in Laglio, followed by the carabinieri from the Cernobbio station and colleagues from the Como labor inspectorate unit. The incident was finally also reported to the ATS technicians who communicated to the prosecutor’s office what had just happened in Laglio. The magistrate on duty, prosecutor Antonia Pavan, ordered the seizure of the construction site while the body of the unfortunate construction worker is now available to the judicial authority for the autopsy examination which has yet to be ordered. The investigation will be based on the dynamics of the rollover.

The accident in fact occurred with a witness nearby who will therefore be able to report what he knows to the military. It seems that the excavator, driven by the victim, had been rented specifically to carry out those excavation works. Carlo Lenatti was driving it, proceeding in reverse, when suddenly, on an uphill road, the vehicle overturned, dragging him and crushing him. It is difficult at the moment to be able to say more, except that the desperate rescue operations – after the gravity of the event was immediately clear – were unable to save the poor victim from death who remained trapped between the sheets of the small excavator he was using .

In the morning the news of the death reached the community of Montagna, where the man lived with his mother and everyone remembers him as a good boy with no worries and a great worker, always ready to lend a hand to his neighbors.

«Another fatal accident at work involving the province of Sondrio. Our concern is increasing, the need for greater education, information and training is increasingly pressing” write in a note the trade union organizations of the province of Sondrio CGIL, CISL and UIL with the provincial secretariats Flai, Fai, Uila and Fillea, Filca, Feneal . «As a unitary provincial union of the agri-food and construction sectors we publicly express our closeness to the family of poor Carlo. In addition to the pain and tears, however, we cannot refrain from expressing our growing concern for such tragic events involving our province. A month ago Luca Manzoni, a 51-year-old surveyor, tragically died crushed by prefabricated wooden walls in Valdidentro; and today Carlo Lenatti, from Montagna in Valtellina, dies crushed under the weight of his excavator.”

«2024 – the unions write again – is dramatically highlighting how much need there is for training, training and information on health and safety in the world of work. It is not a question of self-employment or employee work, work is work and one cannot leave one’s life in the hands of fate and always attribute death at work to pure fatality. We work and we will do so even more vigorously, so that in all the places where we can exercise our action, the culture of safety at work is strengthened, as a model of social and economic development”.
