Mobile ultra-broadband, prices plummeting by 24.1% in Europe

There Mobile broadband is getting cheaper for the customers of European telcos. According to the study of European CommissionMobile and fixed broadband prices in Europe 2022” (DOWNLOAD HERE THE COMPLETE REPORT), on average mobile broadband prices are dropped by 15% in the European Union in 2022 compared to 2021 in the different categories studied. In particular, the cost of mobile plans 1Gb and 5Gb data alone fell by 18.6% and 13.4%, respectively and, even, those at 50 Giga by 24.1%.

The same trend is observed in data and voice planswith price drops from -3% of the 1 Gb + 30 calls packages per -22% for 10 GB + 100 calls packages.

In general, the average price of 5.88 euros/ppp (prices in euros normalized for purchasing power parity) of the EU27 for a 1 Giga plan represents one of the most affordable costs for mobile broadband in the world. The same applies to the 5 Giga (9.43 euro/ppp), 10 Giga (11.64 euro/ppp) and 50 Giga (19.89 euro/ppp) plans. South Korea and the United States have increasingly higher prices.

The European Commission study includes 2022 data on fixed and mobile broadband prices for consumers in the EU27, the UK, Iceland, Norway, Japan, South Korea and the USA. To estimate the prices were evaluated the five largest Internet service providers and the three largest mobile network operators by market share in each country and pricing data was collected in October 2022. The statistical baskets used are defined according to Berec guidelines and cover 5 baskets for fixed broadband, based on different download speeds, 5 for data-only mobile broadband based on different download volumes, and 7 baskets for voice and data mobile broadband.

In mobile broadbandthe most convenient offers for consumers are found in Romania, Denmark and Finland, but throughout the EU27, mobile broadband cost less in October 2022 than in October 2021: on average -15% and with greater savings as the Giga increases.

In particular, 20Gb data-only offers have become 7.6% cheaper and those at 50 Gb they cost 24.1% less.

In voice and data tariffs, the trend is similar, with price drops between 3% and 22%, with notable differences between the different EU countries.

In fixed broadband, the least expensive offers in the EU are those of the telcos of Romania, Lithuania, Latvia and Bulgaria. But, in general, fixed broadband prices have fallen across the Unionalbeit with some differences.

In the category single play 30-100 Mbps prices are decreasing, up to a maximum of -9%, while there was a slight increase in prices in the double play (+1.69%) and triple play (+2.42%) offers compared to 2021. But above 1 Gigabit, triple play offers became cheaper by about 4.14%.

In the case of converged bundles, i.e. packages that include mobile broadband services (voice and data) and fixed broadband access, the cheapest prices in Europe are still found in Romania, Lithuania and Bulgaria. To provide an overview of broadband price trends in the European Union, the study also grouped member countries into four clusters, giving the dark green symbol to those with the cheapest prices and then, as prices rise, indicating the cluster of countries with a light green, orange and red symbol.

In the furniture sector, Italy belongs to the least expensive countries (light green symbol), together with Poland, Spain, Slovenia, Lithuania, France, Ireland. Cheaper are only Romania, Denmark and Finland. Prices rise in Luxembourg, Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden, Greece and Germany, to become even more expensive in Portugal, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

In fixed broadbandRomania and Lithuania are the cheapest countries, followed by Finland, Latvia, Bulgaria and Hungary. Italy is placed almost in the middle of the tablewith the red symbol for offers up to 30 Mbps and prices that gradually become more convenient as the speed increases, up to light green symbol for offers up to 1 Gbps and above. The most expensive countries are Belgium, Portugal, the Netherlands, Ireland and Austria.
