On the death of Mattia Giani there are still many points to clarify. The autopsy carried out on the body of the 26-year-old footballer from Castelfiorentino who died following an illness on the playing field will now provide further details on what happened during the match against Lanciotto at Campi Bisenzio and in the following moments: from the failure to use the defibrillator to the lack of a sports doctor and ambulance on site.
The causes of death
The report of the autopsy examination, carried out by the medical examiner Beatrice Defraia at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Florence, will be filed with the Prosecutor’s Office in 90 days and will have to clarify the causes of the player’s death. A case of manslaughter has been opened in the case and two consultants have been appointed. Part of the team had already worked on Davide Astori’s case, and they will have to ascertain whether Mattia Giani was suffering from some pathology that the tests carried out during the sports fitness visit could have identified or whether it was a sudden cause.
The memory of his brother
Meanwhile, Mattia’s body was returned to the family, and only days after his death on Monday 15 April did his brother Elia, a footballer himself, abandon himself to the memory. On Instagram he published a post with some photos of children and a more recent shot, accompanied by a touching dedication: «Hi Matti, my big brother. You have been my example from day one, with your humility, your respect and your goodness. I’ve been trying to write about you for days – we read in the post – but I’m afraid of not being able to express what you were. We have never been fluent in words but one look was enough for us to understand each other. Because of our same passion that our father passed on to us, we didn’t live everyday life but we were always each other’s sidekicks.”
Elia Giani is also a footballer, he wears the shirt of Legnano Salus, in Serie C. He is the partner of the sister of Roma player Gianluca Mancini. «I hope to become at least half the man you were, and to one day teach my children your same values. I am and will always be proud of you. Now take me by the hand and let’s lead this new life together”, concludes Elia Giani.
