Qualifications
For Max Verstappen, reigning world champion, it is the fifth consecutive pole since the start of the season: number 37 of his career and number 100 for Red Bull. Second place for teammate Sergio Perez. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Lando Norris (McLaren) will start on the second row. Third row for Oscar Piatri (McLaren) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari). Seventh place went to the other Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, eighth was George Russell (Mercedes), ninth was Nico Hülkenberg with Haas, tenth was Valtteri Bottas (Sauber). Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), who came second in the sprint race, was eliminated in Q1: he finished it with the 18th time, due to an error at turn 14 in the final moments of the session.

The Sprint race
Before pole, Max Verstappen also won the Sprint race of the Chinese GP, the first of the Formula 1 world championship season. On the Shanghai circuit, the Red Bull champion preceded Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes and teammate Sergio Perez. Fourth place for Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari, ahead of the other Ferrari of Carlos Sainz. Lando Norris, who started on pole, eventually finished sixth ahead of his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Fernando Alonso, third until three laps from the end, threatened by the Perez-Leclerc-Sainz trio, came into contact with Sainz and had to give up. Thanks to the victory in the Sprint race, Verstappen obtained another eight points in the championship and widened the gap with chasing Perez: 15 points now separate the Dutchman from the Mexican.
