conscientious objector doctors rise to 56%.

Even at the extreme edge of the Northeast, in Friuli Venezia Giulia which remains – it must be said – in the upper and more “European” part of the ranking, Voluntarily terminating a pregnancy is becoming increasingly difficult. And to prove it there is a report to the Chamber of Deputies before the Minister of Health of the Meloni government, Orazio Schillaci. THE conscientious objector doctors that yes those who refuse to practice abortion are in fact on the rise.

Conscientious objector doctors in Fvg

Until a few years ago in Friuli Venezia Giulia we were talking about one doctor in two, for a share that was exactly 50 percent. According to the latest report presented to Montecitorio, in fact, the percentage of conscientious objector doctors in our region has risen to almost 56 percent, to be precise at 55.7 percent. For example, a higher share than that of some regions of Central Italy which in the past were lower in the ranking of respect for what is a right established by law. An example? Umbria has 53 percent of objecting doctors. Puglia – and we move to the South – is at 48 percent, therefore below the one in two doctor who refuses to legally perform abortion within the terms of the legislation. «No substantial differences were found in the socio-demographic characteristics of women who carried out a voluntary pharmacological termination of pregnancy, even if in general they are less young, more educated women, with a greater proportion of Italian citizenship and unmarried compared to those who aborted with other methods”, we read in the report of the Chamber of Deputies.

Pregnancy termination departments

I am nine, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, the structures in which there is an Obstetrics department and Gynecology in which it is also possible practice voluntary termination of pregnancy. We are at 80 percent coverage and in this case our region is well above what appears to be the country’s average, which instead remains at a less than honorable 59 percent. The data from Southern Italy are important in this case. In a calendar year it was estimated that in Friuli Venezia Giulia there were 1,219 voluntary terminations of pregnancy, compared to a share of live births of just over 7 thousand people. It has been calculated that 5.4 women between the ages of 15 and 49 per thousand had an abortion in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

In 2009 more than 2 thousand interruptions in Fvg

What is surprising, then, is the comparison between what was happening in Friuli Venezia Giulia at the dawn of the last decade and the numbers reached today, also conditioned by a general lower propensity of couples to conceive children. In 2009, for example, in our region there were more than two thousand voluntary terminations of pregnancy within a year. A figure that has continued to decline ever since. It went to around 1,800 operations in 2012, to 1,378 in 2018 and finally to just over 1,200 today.

The typology

The report presented to the Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci in the Chamber of Deputies delves even further into the analysis of the phenomenon and says that in Friuli Venezia Giulia the majority of women who choose to voluntarily terminate a pregnancy are people who have a stable job. More than one in two women has a job and is not a student or a housewife. And more than eight hundred women out of the 1,200 total are Italians who have always lived in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The share of voluntary interruptions of pregnancy with the connotations of urgency is practically residual, i.e. equal to just over 14 percent.
