A particular house that all the people of Cagliari certainly know: if you haven’t yet guessed where it is, we’ll reveal it to you. We are in Giorgino, of which we will tell you some historical details thanks to CagliariTurismo.it.
Just a kilometer and a half away from the centre, Giorgino is a very particular historical and geographical reality: perched along the initial stretch of the sandy strip of “La Playa” which separates the Pond of Cagliari from the Gulf of Angels, adjacent to what a Once upon a time it was the islet of San Simone, the neighborhood was founded in 1939 under the fascist regime to create homes for fishermen in the area.
Close yet so far from the city, its inhabitants continue to keep the traditions and customs of the village alive. In this sense, the Feast of Sant’Efisio plays a predominant role for the community of Giorgino: the fishermen are the only ones who accompany the Saint to the small church located in the village, where he is stripped of his city trappings to wear the habit of countryside. The clothes worn by the inhabitants of Giorgino during this procession, which represents the most important religious festival in Sardinia, are very simple in their workmanship, almost devoid of jewels and symbolize in their colors the strong bond between those who live in the village and the sea.
The Giorgino Fishing Village is also renowned for its Fish Festival. Organized for over thirty years by the Neighborhood Committee in Our Lady of Fatima square, the natural setting of one of the most evocative and unprecedented panoramas of the city, the event traditionally takes place on the first weekend of September.
