The death of Elena Russo, a young 20-year-old law student, who tragically passed away on January 30, 2022, continues to raise questions and doubts. The girl, who supported herself in Modena by delivering pizzas, lost her life in a car accident while she was driving a Fiat Punto. The vehicle, provided by the pizzeria she worked for, crashed into a pole in via Tirabassi while moving from San Bartolomeo to Castelbaldo, leading to the tragic epilogue. From the latest reports it appears that the accident occurred not only due to Elena’s speed (still to be ascertained), but also due to the lack of maintenance of the car and in particular of the tyres.

Responsibilities

Initially considered as a tragic accident caused by excessive speed alone, investigations subsequently revealed much more serious potential responsibilities. Elena’s parents, Annamaria and Francesco Russo, supported by the lawyers Giulio Cesare Bonazzi and Simona Magnani, have in fact brought to light a series of negligence regarding the maintenance of the vehicle. The car’s wheels, crucial elements for safety, were significantly worn: two of them were 16 and 8 years old respectively, therefore older than the car itself.

The inconsistencies

The reconstructions do not add up regarding Elena’s speed at the time of the accident. While the defense claims that the girl was driving at an excessive speed, around 130 km/h, other reports vary considerably, with estimates ranging between 50 and 140 km/h. These discrepancies underline the complexity of reconstructing events and the difficulty in attributing a single responsibility for what happened.

The developments

The turning point came because in recent days the judge for preliminary investigations, Andrea Rat, has ordered that within ten days the Prosecutor’s Office formulates the forced indictment against the two legal representatives of the pizzeria, considering the accident an accident at work with fatal consequences resulting from negligence on tire safety. Court-appointed engineer Mattia Strangi confirmed in a recent hearing that the condition of the tires did not guarantee the necessary grip on the road. While the process continues and the community awaits further developments, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia has decided to dedicate a classroom to Elena Russo, in recognition of her commitment and dedication both in her studies and in volunteering with the Red Cross .
