The lawyer Savino Vantaggiato, a member of the Salento Region Movement, has raised criticism towards the mayor of Lecce, Salvemini, regarding the management of urban security in the city. Vantaggiato underlined that the issue of urban safety in Lecce is not at all new, with the Salento Region Movement having long denounced problems of degradation and situations of high social risk in some areas of the city.
The mayor’s recent proposal to involve the Army to address the issue of urban security was deemed by Vantaggiato to be a wrong and ineffective approach. He argued that militarizing the city is not the solution, but rather a vision of urban security policies different from that implemented so far is needed.
In this context, Vantaggiato highlighted the importance of a regional law on urban safety, specifically underlining the proposal put forward by the regional councilor Paolo Pagliaro, which provides for the establishment of the “Neighborhood Police” project. This project, currently awaiting approval in the Regional Council, aims to strengthen the presence of the municipal police through an organizational model based on “municipal proximity policing”.
Vantaggiato underlined that this approach, based on the involvement of the local community and prevention, reflects the Pact for participatory and integrated urban security signed in Lecce in May 2019 between the Prefecture, the Municipality and the Puglia Region.
Finally, Vantaggiato reiterated that urban security must be addressed with commitment and prevention, rather than resorting to the militarization of the streets, and emphasized the importance of adopting concrete measures aimed at improving the quality of life and safety of the citizens of Lecce.
