Numerous passengers are stranded at Dubai International Airport after their flights were canceled due to unprecedented rainfall earlier this week in the United Arab Emirates and in other neighboring countries. According to what I learned from “Agency Nova”, among them there are also a hundred Italians. The Italian Consulate General in Dubai is in contact with passengers and, in particular, with the Emirati police authorities for the most sensitive cases. According to local authorities, the hundreds of flights canceled due to flooded runways will be rescheduled within the next 24 hours.

“We expect operational capacity to reach 60-70 percent” by the end of the day and for “things to return to normal in the next 24 hours,” Dubai Airport’s chief operating officer said today, Majed to the Joker, to the Saudi-owned pan-Arab satellite broadcaster “Al Arabiya”.

The Emirates were hit earlier this week by unprecedented rainfall. The Gulf country recorded the largest 24-hour rainfall in its modern history on Tuesday, marking the most since climate records began in 1949.

The situation has caused widespread disruption across the country. Al Joker said the record rainfall and resulting road closures “have undoubtedly significantly affected arriving and departing passenger traffic”, adding that cooperation and coordination with various authorities and airlines is ongoing to address problems and assist travelers affected by delays.
