A near tragedy in San Benedetto del Tronto. A dramatic maritime accident, in fact, occurred just before 1 am off the coast. The Antonio Padre, a fishing vessel registered at the local port, sank after colliding with the decommissioned platform Fabrizia.
The accident was apparently caused by the impact of the vessel with the load-bearing structure of the platform, located just over six miles from the coast. The fishing vessel suffered a serious gash which caused an immediate influx of water, leading to its rapid sinking. Fortunately, the timely alarm was transmitted to the Port Authority via the Epirb (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) device, which allowed rapid localization thanks to the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system.
The crew, made up of three members, managed to save themselves using the life raft. The men were promptly rescued by another boat present in the area, the “Roberta”, which assisted the shipwrecked people on board.
The rescue operations were immediately coordinated by the Port Authority, which sent the SAR CP 843 patrol boat to the scene, specialized in search and rescue operations at sea. Investigations are underway to clarify the dynamics of the accident and evaluate possible preventive measures for the future.
