Smoky the dog was burned in a house fire. He was still a puppy, but it was stronger than those deep burns on his body. Now, adopted by the fire chief, he will become a symbol of resilience but also of the importance of fire prevention to be taught even to the littlest ones.
That terrible day in Brookings, Oregon (United States), with him in that house there were his human family and his four-legged mother, all safe while the house was destroyed. Firefighters took the 7-kilogram puppy to the South Coast Humane Society, who found unique burns on his back and other parts of his body that appeared to be “made of plastic.”
Smoky, as he was named after what happened, needed a lot of intensive care including multiple cold baths, medications, ointments, wound management and skin removal. A few weeks later, when the dog’s wounds were healing and the puppy was starting to feel more energetic, the organization called Chief Corey Bryant of the Greenacres Fire Protection District: he had fallen in love with that puppy and his determination and desire to live.
Now Smoky has been adopted by the firefighter who took him home. And despite the difficult start in life, the little survivor will be trained and taken to area schools with Chief Bryant to help teach children about house fires and how to prevent them.
