Akira Toriyama with “Dragon Ball” created a work that would indelibly mark the world of anime, revolutionizing the shonen genre with a series of unforgettable heroes, memorable antagonists and breathtaking transformations. Also iconic is the mythical Kamehameha (the energy wave) which takes its name from a real historical figure.

The choice of the name of this powerful attack is not the result of chance or a simple search for captivating sounds, but hides a tribute to a very important historical figure: Kamehameha I, the founder and first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii (today threatened by… furious chickens out of control).

Toriyama, while searching for the perfect name for the attack that would make its mark on the series, wanted it to include the term “kame”which in Japanese means “turtle”, a recurring and significant element within the work.

It was in this context that his wife, Nachi Mikami, suggested taking inspiration from a real historical figure to give the move an unforgettable name. The choice fell on Kamehameha I, not only for the uniqueness of the name but also for its easy memorization. Toriyama enthusiastically welcomed the suggestionand thus was born the name of the attack that would win the hearts of millions of spectators.

The energy wave quickly became “Dragon Ball’s” most famous move and is inspired by a historical figure so far removed from the original context of the anime, demonstrating how art can draw from different sources.
