Mourning in the world of football, the Castelfiorentino player passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

Mattia Giani didn’t make it. Struck by a heart attack in the Eccellenza Toscana match between Lanciotto Campo and Castelfiorentino, his team, the 26-year-old passed away on Monday 15 April at the Careggi hospital in Florence, where he had been urgently transported following his illness on the pitch.

Giani collapsed to the ground fourteen minutes into the match and his condition immediately appeared desperate. After struggling between life and death, the young player of the Tuscan club was declared dead on Monday.

“Unfortunately, terrible news reaches me. Mattia didn’t make it” the mayor of Castelfiorentino Alessio Falorni announced on Facebook. “Words are definitely lacking in these moments. A terrible tragedy. A heartbreaking pain. We can only gather together in a very strong embrace to the family and to the society to which they belong. Rest in peace.”
