The new frontier of copper raiders is now the cables that bring internet and landline telephones into the homes of Syracusans (copper fiber in particular). If previously the copper thieves targeted the public lighting lines, now replaced by other less valuable conductors, they are now “doing it again” by shredding the copper sections from the “lockers” of the company that owns the digital infrastructure and serves all the other companies. Predatory crimes which unfortunately cannot be adequately addressed.
Result? There are hundreds of Syracusans who find themselves without internet or a landline at home. A disservice to which sector companies are struggling to respond, as more than one replacement intervention is necessary. The intervention priorities depend on the number of users served by each device and not on the date of reporting the fault. The best-served areas have priority over those with fewer users. On average, the discomfort lasts for two to three weeks.
Call centers under attack, but there is a lack of solutions on the consumer side. It is possible to request refunds, but only once the fault has been resolved. The only suggestion from telephone companies is to use mobile phone data. However, it is difficult to manage homes like this where streaming and home automation are now prevalent.
