It reaches 185 km/h. To make it again the spicier the aspirated recipealready rewarded by the market with over 56,000 units produced, there In fact, Renault chooses the most logical path, both to tickle the sporting clientele who witnessed the first victories of the supercharged yellow transalpine single-seaters in the top formula, and to easily increase power and annoy the competition, which in the meantime is sensing interest for this solution. The result of adopting a Garrett T3 turbocharger water-cooled (but without intercooler) is that the well-known 1,397 cm³ four-cylinder can deliver 110 HP, albeit at 6,000 rpm, instead of 6,400. Sufficient, however, to reach 185 km/h and to sprint from 0 to 100 in just 9.1 seconds (the car’s curb weight is just 870 kg).

It can be recognized by the stickers. To contain all this exuberance too the rear brakes are now disc brakes, while externally, since 1983, the writing “Turbo” (inevitable for any supercharged sports car of the 80s) has replaced the Alpine one. However, there are also newly designed alloy wheels, again 13″ (combined with 175/60 tyres), inspired by those mounted on the R5 Turbo and, unfortunately, a anonymous rectangular rear-view mirror takes the place of the aerodynamic one of the naturally aspirated Alpine.

All new dashboard. Inside, the upholstery is now more sober: the seats have a different shape, more squared and with more pronounced sides and the dashboard is also new. Different shape of the instrument panel as well as the graphics and in the center of the dashboard there is now a bulky plastic console in which, in addition to the heating controls, the voltmeter and the oil pressure indicator are located.

There is also the rare “Coppa” version. Power steering and electric windows appear in the list of options, while in 1984 the car came renamed Lauréate Turbo: for the occasion, the bumpers are painted in the same color as the bodywork, the tinted windows are eliminated and the general look becomes more bourgeois. Nothing to do with the 706 examples in the “Coppa” version, i.e. those destined to be used in the single-brand Trophy – inaugurated with the R5 in LS trim with a special tuning kit and continued with the naturally aspirated Alpines -, equipped with stiffer suspensions and oversized brakes and, if set up for racing, equipped with a fire kit and roll cage. Even a young man Jean Alesi began his racing career by becoming French champion in 1984 with the 5 Alpine Turbo and the prices, already high, as the model was produced in less than half the number of units (23,425) compared to its aspirated sister, are quite high and exceed 20,000 euros.
