Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Elon Musk’s criticisms against Yasuke: Ubisoft’s opinion

Immediately after the official announcement, the presence of Yasuke as the protagonist in Assassin’s Creed Shadows generated numerous discussions online due to the character’s African origins, a historical figure who actually existed and a faithful servant of Oda Nobunaga. And there has been no shortage of criticism in this regard Elon Musk.

Speaking about the new Assassin’s Creed and of Yasukethe famous entrepreneur has in fact claimed that “DEI kills art“, pointing the finger at the continuous search for diversity, equity and inclusiveness (the meaning of the acronym OF THE) that numerous creators pursue today in the production of their works. Strong words to which however Ubisoft preferred not to respond explicitly, as the executive producer explains Marc-Alexis Coté in an interview with the journalist Stephen Totilo Of Game Files.

Coté first of all confessed that at first, after seeing Musk’s comment on Twitter/X, he was strongly tempted to respond, but then he let it go. “That comment stirred emotions, and the first thing I wanted to do was reopen my deleted Twitter/X account to respond. But then I took a step back and focused on myself to try to delve deeper into the emotions that came from that tweet“, explained Coté adding that “attacking someone like Elon Musk would not have convinced people of our point of view as a team“.

The executive producer then explained why Ubisoft chose Yasuke as the male protagonist for Assassin’s Creed Shadows: “We have this super mysterious historical figure that little is known about, and that’s exactly what we want to cover in an Assassin’s Creed. What Elon Musk says does not correspond to the game we are building, we need people to try the game directly. And if within the first 11 minutes and 47 seconds they are not convinced of what they are doing, then it can be discussed“. According to Coté, this specific time frame he cited is the key to fully understanding Ubisoft’s vision of Assassin’s Creed Shadows: “I hope the public will be open minded and see the game for what it is, which is a new Assassin’s Creed, I think the best we’ve ever created“.

Ubisoft considers Assassin’s Creed Shadows the first truly next-gen game in the series, thus demonstrating that it has great ambitions with the new main chapter arriving on PC, PlayStation 5 And Xbox Series next November 15th.
