Microsoft Recall has been postponed: there are security problems

Recall for Windows 11 will not debut with the first Copilot + PCs: in recent weeks Microsoft has returned to the new feature several times, revising its plans in favor of the feedback received from users of the Windows Insider program.
After excluding the default activation of the application, the Redmond giant has decided to postpone its release until a later date. Recall will therefore not be present in the first laptops equipped with advanced AI features. Here are all the details.

Privacy and security behind the Recall postponement

A demo of Recall

As we mentioned, in recent weeks Microsoft had already changed its plans for Recall, following feedback from the community. The feature for Windows 11 that regularly captures desktop screens and then has them analyzed by artificial intelligence, with the aim of extrapolating the data, was initially active by default. The Redmond company then decided to make it optional, leaving users the possibility to decide whether to use it or not.
At the same time, Microsoft intervened with an initial crackdown on data security and privacy, adding the Windows Hello filter for access to data history.

Apparently however, the system implemented by the company is not sufficient to guarantee the expected protection standards. For this reason, Microsoft has decided to postpone the release of Recall, leaving the explanation to the Windows Insider blog.

We’re changing Recall’s release model to leverage the expertise of the Windows Insider community and ensure the experience meets our high standards of quality and security. This decision is driven by our commitment to providing a reliable, safe and robust experience for all customers and to gather further feedback before making the feature available to all Copilot+ users“, Microsoft wrote on the Blog. “When Recall becomes available in the Windows Insider Program, we’ll publish a blog post with details on how to get the preview. To experience Recall, WIP customers will need a Copilot+ PC due to our hardware requirements. We’re eager to hear feedback from Windows Insiders” the company later added.

In short, we will have to wait a little longer for the official rollout of Recall, as always we will keep you updated.
