If the Summer Game Fest 2024 was disappointing, the organizers of the new edition of the Future Games Show Summer Showcase were able to create an event full of surprises, accompanied by the inevitable batch of World Premieres of video games belonging to the most disparate genres.
The litmus test of originality and the spirit of resourcefulness that all the titles shown during the summer Future Games Show have in common is represented by the first video game admired during the event: we are referring to Bogdan’s Cross, the adventure with the dreaming bear to become a Knight Templar.
The scrolling action adventure by Federico Moreno Breser and Mcfly Tech opened the waltz of an interactive show which, despite not involving the big names in the sector and their most anticipated triple A blockbusters, still managed to meet the tastes and needs of a public has never been so hungry for new things, proof of which is the success of relatively ‘minor’ works which have quickly become gods real cults (did someone say Dredge, Dave the Diver and Palworld?).
Fans of ‘graphics’ adventures were satisfied with the in-depth video on Nobody Wants to Die, the sci-fi action film inspired by Blade Runner and BioShock. They also aroused great interest Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 Deep Divethe new gameplay of the 5D platformer Screen Bound, the demonstration film of the GTA-like ‘old school’ The Precinct and the spectacular collection of interactive films that open a window into the future of video games made on Unreal Engine 5 and on the enormous potential of Epic Games’ multiplatform graphics engine, perfect for creating both very high-budget titles (just think of Hellblade 2) and independent but no less interesting projects.
Also during the latest edition of the Future Games Show Summer Showcase 2024 there was space for many other video games that aspire to become real indie phenomena. From this perspective, it is truly impossible not to think back to the evocative scenes of the isometric stealth adventure Eriksholm, the terror felt by the protagonists of The Casting of Frank Stone and the frenzy of the fighting ofHyper-realistic FPS Bodycam just landed on Steam.
From this Future Games Show, therefore, we will be left with the image of a show capable of opening a window onto the future which has allowed us to peek into the folds of the creative multiverse of more original and promising independent works arriving between now and the next few months, both on PC and console.
