the agreement with OpenAI is close

Apple is concluding an agreement with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT functions on Apple’s next operating system for the iPhone, iOS 18. Bloomberg revealed the indiscretion. According to the agency, the agreement would be part of a broader strategy of the Cupertino giant which aims to integrate artificial intelligence functions on its devices to catch up with its competitors on the AI front.

Apple and ChatGPT: first the ban, now the agreement

«The two parties are finalizing the terms of an agreement for the use of ChatGPT features in iOS 18, Apple’s next operating system for iPhone, said some sources, who asked not to be identified», writes Bloomberg. This is a significant change of direction after Apple had an internal document last year that prohibited its employees from using ChatGPT and similar language models, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. The decision to limit the use of competing LLMs stemmed from fears that user data would be disclosed, as the company itself explained in its internal report. This decision had led to the belief that the company was about to develop its own similar technology, but apparently this is not the case at the moment.

Negotiations with Google

The Cupertino giant is also in negotiations with Google, although at the moment there do not appear to be the conditions for an agreement. «Apple has also discussed licensing the company’s Gemini chatbot with Alphabet Inc.’s Google. These discussions have not led to an agreement, but they are ongoing”, Bloomberg explains in this regard. Apple’s strategy will probably be clarified in June at the Worldwide Developers Conference. Cupertino CEO Tim Cook recently explained that artificial intelligence represents “a fundamental opportunity” and assured that Apple will announce more “in the coming weeks”.
