Google Pixel 8a official: when the price drops it will be a real deal

It is always said that you shouldn’t compare the list price with the street price, but at the time we are writing the news of the arrival of the Pixel 8a the Pixel 8 is being sold for 549 euros via Unieuro, which together with Amazon is the official distributor of Google for Italy. The same price, 549 euros, at which the new model presented today will be sold which, although belonging to the Pixel 8 family, is positioned on the lowest step.

The “a” series marks the end of a generation: photos of the Pixel 9 have already appeared online, which will feature a new design, and the Pixel 8a closes the trilogy made up of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, trying to bring much of the features at a price that should be more affordable.

7 year update for Pixel 8a

The Pixel 8a is not a “neutered” Pixel 8, it is a smartphone that was born from the Pixel 7a project and which adopts a new display size, 6.1″: it is slightly smaller than the Pixel 8. The screen is OLED, 1080 x 2400 resolution and 120 Hz refresh, reaches 2000 nits of maximum brightness and also supports HDR content. Compared to the rumors therefore the 120 Hz refresh is presentdoes not stop at 90 Hz, even if there are small differences with the Pixel 8: the screen covering is in fact in Gorilla Glass 3.

Google didn’t hold back in terms of specifications: this same processor Tensor G3, 8 GB LPDDR5x RAM, 128 or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage, 4500mAh of battery with fast cable charging and wireless charging. The body, of course, is made of 100% recycled aluminum with IP67 protection.

There is stereo audio, there is a fingerprint sensor under the display, there is USB 3.2: the only marked differences concern the camera department where both the main camera and the ultra wide camera have undergone significant downsizing , especially the main one.

Instead of the 50 MP Octa PD wide-angle camera with 1/1.31″ sensor, 1.2 μm pixels and ƒ/1.68 aperture there is a 64 MP 1/1.73” quad PD sensor, with 0.8 μm pixels and aperture: ƒ/1.89. Darker, and with smaller pixels. The ultrawide camera is also scaled down, with a smaller sensor and smaller pixels: it has 13 megapixels but instead of having 1.25 μm pixels it has 1.12 μm pixels.

Despite the differences on a purely technical front the camera features remain the sametherefore Ultra HDR and also all the various AI features such as the magic eraser, Magic editor and best shot.

This is not surprising, also because in the end Google wants to promote its experience and the Pixel 8a, which will also have 7 years of updatingoffers the same Pixel experience as the larger models and also having the same processor, its updates will follow those of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.
