Limited Run Games is at the center of criticism from enthusiasts as it has sold one Collector’s Edition of the 1995 horror game D including CD-R discs instead of classically printed discs for 3DO.
3DO hardware can technically read CD-Rs, but compatibility is limited and use can quickly ruin the console’s laser. The consequence is that a console that is not in perfect condition can easily be incompatible with CD-Rs and therefore players end up with useless discs.
Limited Run’s answer
In a statement released to IGN USA, Limited Run says that “want to apologize unreservedly with everyone who purchased the game and encountered a problem.”
“Producing games for hardware that is more than 30 years old presents its own set of challenges,” the company says. “For printing our physical records We partner with one of the largest record replica suppliers in North America and, despite researching the original 3DO hardware and software, we encountered quality and reliability issues when we tried to print 3DO discs the traditional way.”
“In an effort to offer full compatibility with the original hardware, our disc playback partner has been able to successfully produce the discs using a CD-R format, which we believe will work with all 3DO systems available in trade This process was professionally performed and has been used for ensure maximum compatibility rather than to reduce costs.”
“We tested the discs on the 3DO consoles in our office, and all five game discs worked as expected. Only when shipping to our customers did we realize that some users were experiencing difficulties. We will not sell or ship any more copies of this game or any other 3DO titles until the situation is resolved.”
