There have been graphically beautiful games on PS2, capable of making the most of the technical capabilities of the black monolith with such effectiveness that they almost seem like games from an advanced generation. But several titles could be mentioned that are capable of going beyond the standards.
For example, God of War 2 and Shadow of the Colossus for PS2 come to mind which, released late in the console’s life cycle, pushed it beyond its limits with enough power to leave anyone impressed. But digging deeper there is also an acclaimed production Square Enix capable of reaching the same technical levels: let’s talk about Final Fantasy XII.
Even the Japanese company’s colossal role-playing game was released very late on PS2: in Japan it became a reality in March 2006, while European players will have to wait until February 2007 before getting their hands on it, a period in which all attention was directed towards PlayStation 3 which would become reality in Europe the following month. 
However, the long development period allowed Square Enix to reach incredible heights of technical quality by PS2 standards: the computer graphics movies, for example, were among the most elaborate and sophisticated ever proposed by the Sony console, with a visual quality that seemed really coming from a PS3, but even in-game Final Fantasy XII defended itself very well, with a superlative quality of the polygonal models and a level of detail with very few rivals on the PS2.
Technical excellence is combined with a strongly renewed gameplay compared to the past iterations of the historic brand, with new ideas and settings that have offered players a fresh and original Final Fantasy, thanks in particular to the Gambit System which changed the way of approaching combat, thus allowing the development of in-depth strategies and a personalized approach to each battle.
Final Fantasy XII has really squeezed the potential of the PS2 like a lemon, establishing itself as one of the most technically majestic games of the black monolith: did you play it at the time of its original release?
